Visit our marine interpretation
centre in Bonavista and learn about the wonders of
the deep. Your visit starts with an introduction to
live plankton using our digital microscope. We talk
about the importance of these organisms to the
marine ecosystem before moving onto larger animals.
After plankton, we have a large variety of preserved
fish to talk about, including deep sea angler fish,
billfish, hagfish and black swallower. This is
complimented by our underwater camera which provides
live views of fish in Bonavista Harbour. The centre
also houses a touch tank which allows us to
introduce you to the common sea creatures found
along our coastline. Before you leave you will find
out about the seabirds which abound in our area. Our
displays include a replica puffin burrow with egg
and several carved replicas of birds with associated
display panels.
Our tour specializes in squid
and their relationship to other animals in the
ocean. We have two giant squid, both of which were
washed up in Newfoundland in 2004. This is the only
place in the world where you can see a male and
female giant squid together on display. You will
learn about squid biology and some of the research
we do into the importance of squid in the diet of
marine animals.
Subsea Wonders is located next
to the Harbour Quarters Inn in Bonavista and is open
from 10am to 5pm daily. The building also
serves as the departure point for our "Puffin Island
Hike".
